I would love to meet those guys. Since this isn't a formal audition, I will probably have fun with the piece and take a lot more liberties than usual, especially in the cadenza. It will be a fun time for all.bloke wrote:The tuba player in the Memphis Symphony toots along with the Bartlett Community Band, so I'm sure he'll stick around to hear you.
There is another pretty good player in that band as well...a guy whom I'm comfortable with using as a "sub" when I screw up and double-book (etc.)
(bump)
Other works on our program include Valdres (the older arrangement), Italian Rhapsody (a fun new piece by Julie Giroux), Rhythm Danse (Saucedo), Shenandoah (Ticheli), VW Folk Song Suite 1, Danzon (Bernstein), and the Rondo from the “Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo” by Malcolm Arnold (arranged by John Paynter).
You should tag along with Bartlett and bring your Helicon

BUMP
I was pushing the boundaries between "Schmaltz" and "overboard" during several run-throughs at rehearsal last night. I will NOT be playing this 100% "straight" as I have played this for enough auditions and want to have fun with it, bring out the music instead of the antiseptic
This is a really fun piece once one goes beyond the Catalinet interpretation.
Hopefully I will achieve the proper balance and a good time will be had by all!

A good time was had by all today. I pushed the limits of interpretation in a few spots, but this wasn't an audition and I did manage to resist the urge to go overboard (IE no multiphonics or multi octave glisses
).
There is a little bit of rotary F tuba funkiness present in the low register if you look for it; I haven't had the horn long enough / spent enough time with it to 100% dial out the funk, but I am definitely getting there (CC / slide horns comprise virtually all playing outside the house).
The band had a great time; they actually play much stronger than is apparent on this recording; they had minimal time to prepare for this piece and some of the parts are challenging for amateurs. I may put up a few other recordings of the band really kickin', but my Geocities bandwidth is limited.
This was recorded on a Zoom H2 using the internal front mics. I propped the recorder on a seat in the first row, so some of the ambience was blocked out, unfortunately. The raw .wav was normalized and converted to .mp3 using Audacity on Windows XP.
Oh, and for all you TubeNet nerds, it was played on a first generation 5 valve Mirafone 181 F tuba in goldbrass, with the small leadpipe and the flat wholestep 5th valve slide, using a Yamaha Bobo solo mouthpiece (replica version) while standing up (sans strap or stand, Baadsvik style).
Recordings of the VW compressed to 56kbs and only approx 2 Mb in size can be downloaded at

and mirror site (if first is busy)
