I received the following e-mail from Sumner Erickson. I thought it might be of interest. The new CD he mentions is the 24 Melodious Etudes by Vasiliev.

Also, if you are thinking about going to see him in Austin, he playing the guitar (not tuba) and singing.

Howdy DOOdy!

I hope all are well. I am!

I had a great trip to Lubbock and my tuba recital was enthusiastically received. Folks were very kind! I also took my new tuba solo CD with me that I just got last Thursday. I am excited about it being out and about finishing that project. The Buddy Holly Museum was great! As well as Buddy Holly Plaza, Buddy Holly Ave., his high school.... I listened to his Greatest Hits all weekend riding around his hometown! Great!
RAVE ON!

Speaking of Buddy Holly, I will being playing music by
the man himself as well as other GREAT TEXAS
MUSICIANS: Roky, Roy Orbison, Powell St. John, and The
Big Bopper this Friday the 28th at the Hole in the
Wall. I'll also be playing some music of my own....
I go on at 8PM and please if you can, come on out to
the friendly confines of the Hole! Hope to see you
there!

All of those who have been waiting for a non smoking /
all ages show here it comes! I will play Threadgills
WHQ on Riverside Dr. on Feb.10. at 8:00. Please plan
to come out and eat some great Southern-Comfort food
and listen to me fly the TEXAS MUSIC Flag! (the only
Flag I own).

Also, if anyone wants one of my new tuba CDs please
send $18 (which includes shipping and handling) to me
at P. O. Box 2494, Austin, TX 78768. Beware: this is classical music! AND it is my deep and sincere hope that you will enjoy this CD. I LOVE this music!

I caught Sumner's gutty and amazing performance of the Vasiliev etudes. The man is a machine on the tuba. Had a nice conversation afterward. I look forward to seeing him at Hole in the Wall.

Did he use his tuba tamer?

You have go to love a man who chucks something many people dream of to follow his own dream. It takes really big, steel balls to leave one of the best orchestras in the country. More power to him. He left one set of music for another, equally valid, form. WOW!!!
