Just to update things a bit, we have just received one of the new Kodiak F tubas which will be available for testing at our event. Along with this we have 3 hand made Alan Baer 6450 tubas on hand along with a production model, all in silver. There are a number of Thors on hand in both lacquer and silver as well.

We are celebrating the opening of Tubadome of Elkhart with an event featuring Alan Baer of the New York Philharmonic. The reception begins at 11:00AM on Saturday, September 22nd and will wind down at about 6:00PM. Gerhard Meinl of Meinl Weston will also be here and many noted artists from the area as well. It will be a great place to hear some fine playing, learn a bunch of new stuff and do some networking with other fine musicians.

Alan will be doing a Masterclass on orchestral playing from 2:00PM to about 3:30PM. Please let us know if you can attend so that we can be sure to have plenty of food and beverages on hand. Call Phyllis or Roger at 574-295-6633 by September 10th. Also let me know if you wish to play for Alan's Masterclass. There are limited spots available so drop me a note if you wish to play.

From 3:30 to 6:00 we will have poster signings by Alan and some ensemble "Jam Sessions" so bring your favorite ensemble music. I'm sure there will be plenty of people to honk with and get to know. We'll also have some great horns to try out, possibly including the new Kodiak F tuba!

The festivities will be held at our new building, at 400 Pine Creek Court, Elkhart, Indiana, 46516.

With many retail music stores hitting tough times (Brook Mays, WWBW), internet retailers and self-professed kingpins of the mega-music stores (GC) are really going to town.

I would suggest to everyone: please continue to support the new entrepreneur as well as your local music store in addition to the mega-music stores.

Local music stores often provide much more to a community than merely selling music and instruments. Service, repair, private lessons, connections for selling used instruments, promotion of live concerts, clinics, sponsorship of musicians and teachers--these are just a few of the roles every local music store plays in the musical life of a community and a region.

This is vitally important to our profession. We need to continue to keep music viable in our own community, and the way to do that is to keep supporting those that provide services to our musicians.

Remember: When your horn breaks or you lose a mouthpiece right before your most important performance, you may not have time to wait two-three days to receive these services from an online or mega-retailer with a huge backlog.

Folks, I recently made a trip down to the new building and it looks fantastic. A friendly staff of employees and a nice variety of instruments to play on. Roger has always offered first class service and I imagine he will continue to do so in the new facility in an even greater capacity.

Btw, I also had the good fortune to play some of the handmade 6450/2's and they were all a treat. All were spoken for however otherwise one of them may or may not have gone home with me! They are great instruments with serious ease of play, great pitch and even scale. The ergonmics are very manageable as well. I am still partial to my Nirschl in some ways but these are serious competitors and may be given serious consideration in the furture.

Several people have asked to play for Alan in front of an audience. They will be doing various orchestral excerpts, and after they play, Alan will work with them on the areas that he feels might not be strong enough in an audition situation. The audience gets to watch and learn from the changes that Alan makes in the performance and the player gets the chance to have a mini lesson with Alan Baer.

All the spots for the Masterclass are filled at this time.

I have been notified by the Meinl Weston that we can probably expect to have one of the new Alan Baer model Kodiak F tubas on hand for this event. Also on hand will be 3 hand made, silver, Baer 6450 tubas and a silver 6450 production horn. Along with this we will have a number of silver and lacquer Thor tubas as well.
