On Sunday, September 23, 2007, at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, Missouri, there will be a concert of the St. Louis Rivermen featuring pianist/vocalist Jean Kittrell and Sousaphonist Extraordinaire, David "Red" Lehr. It will be a celebration of Red's 70th birthday and many, many musical friends and acquaintances will be joining the concert in this celebration. There is a reception with cash bar following the concert. It is not a "closed door" affair. The two-hour concert starts at 2 PM. Sheldon Concert Hall is located at 3648 Washington Street in St. Louis. Questions? Call Jean Kittrell at 618-656-5696

Additionally, Red and "The Jazz Incredibles" will be performing a free concert in Chicago at Symphony Center (Orchestra Hall), 220 South Michigan Avenue, on Saturday, October 13 at 5:30 PM. This is in conjunction with the Chicago Symphony's "Day of Music." There is a free CSO concert at 2 PM that afternoon (Dvorak "New World Symphony" and several pieces featuring Branford Marsalis).

Having had the opportunity to hear and meet Red at the Army Band conference a couple of years ago, I highly recommend this to those you close enough to make it. I know I was impressed. He also seemed to be quite a nice guy.

Even though it is free do we need to get tickets or make a reservation ahead of time for either the CSO or Red Lehr concerts?
Thanks for the notice - saw Red at the Glendora House a few years ago and it was great music.

I believe all you have to do is get there early enough to secure a place to listen.
In Chicago: For the CSO concert, I would get there at least 45 minutes beforehand to get it because that will be on-stage and therefore there are a finite number of seats available. Red will probably be at another site at Symphony Center: Rotunda, Buntrock Hall, Ballroom, etc., Those places are standing room with no seats, so I suspect that unless a fire marshall is around, it will be as many as can fit in the space.
In St. Louis: For the concert at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, I am not sure. You should maybe speak with the Sheldon Concert Hall management or give Jean Kittrell a call. I suspect that if you show up early enough, there should be room at that venue as well. By the way, it is a spectacular site as I recall from many years ago.
