Vaughan Williams Concerto in Green Bay, WI

Post by Tony Halloin »

Hello all,

I will be playing the Vaughan Williams Concerto with the Green Bay Civic Symphony on Oct. 27 at the Meyer Theatre in downtown Green Bay, WI. I have no idea how many actual TubeNetters live up in Packerland, but I would be glad to meet you. Go Pack Go!

I'm from that area (I actually know several people who play in the GB Civic Symphony) but unfortunately won't be in town that day. I'm sure it'll be a blast, have fun!

GB represent! Born and raised.

If I didn't have tickets for Bill Frisell that night, I might have used it as an excuse to go see the folks.

Good luck, man. I'm sure the audience will appreciate an artist of your caliber.

Halloin family's music legacy continues at the Meyer

By Warren Gerds

Growing up, Tony Halloin was well aware his family had music playing in its blood.

"I would often fall asleep in my bedroom with my mother (Linda) practicing piano downstairs," he said. "Years later, I would recognize pieces by Beethoven, Chopin and Brahms in music history class, as something my mother played.

"We, as a family, also attended her recitals at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Heritage Hill (State Historical Park) frequently, and I can remember quite vividly her performance of 'Rhapsody in Blue' with the Green Bay Symphony.

"On top of that, we were often brought to Green Bay City Band concerts in the park during the summers to hear Grandma Isabelle and Aunt Mary play horn."

"It's a remarkable legacy," said Betty Brown, violinist with the Green Bay Civic Symphony Orchestra.

Isabelle played horn in the Green Bay City Band for 50 years and taught music in local schools for many of those years.

Aunts Mary, Ann and Beth grew up playing horn, with Mary and Beth going on to study music in college. Mary directs bands in three Green Bay elementary schools. Beth was a member of the U.S. Army Field Band, performed professionally and continues to be actively involved with husband Bruce McDonald, who is bandmaster of the Pacific Fleet Band, and their daughters, Sara and Annie, who are horn players.

Linda is an accomplished pianist who has taught students at UWGB and elsewhere and is active as a performer, particularly of chamber music.

Tony's brothers are fully committed. Evan, who plays bass, is pursuing a master's degree in music performance at Rice University in Texas. Peter, a Lawrence University graduate, plays drums in shipboard orchestras for Carnival Cruise Lines.

Tony's father, Tom, played trombone growing up but put that aside when he became a medical doctor. Tony is working on a doctorate in music.

Tony's parents were brought together by music. Linda attended Green Bay Southwest High School, and Tom attended West.

"They met at a UWGB band camp, of all things," Tony said. "When Tom brought her home to meet Sam (grandfather), Izzie (Isabelle), Mary, Ann and Beth, Linda fit right in since all but Sam played horn and a bit of piano."

Sam always said his wife and kids were the talented ones. However, Sam Halloin served four terms as Green Bay mayor, from 1979 to 1995.

"I pursued music because I really enjoyed — and still enjoy — playing my tuba for people," Tony said. "Early on, I realized there would never be much money involved, and the chance to become fully employed was a long shot, filled with years of preparation. But I just enjoyed it that much and thought I was pretty good at it. I also enjoy the pursuit of perfecting my art. It is unattainable to be perfect, but I enjoy trying."

Halloin is a member of the Navy Band, based in Washington, D.C. The band plays for many important functions, including the state funerals for Presidents Reagan and Ford.

"Some of the best family musical memories I had were serious performances with my mother and brothers," Halloin said. "My mother was my outstanding accompanist for years until I left for college.

"I also was a good jazz guitarist in high school (De Pere), and my brothers and I played many gigs together around Green Bay. Those were always fun because I could really see my brothers' growth as musicians during those earlier years."
