Frank P. Ortega, Tuba, has been a freelance musician and teacher in the NYC metro area for the last 20 years. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music, attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on a merit scholarship and earned a Master of Music degree from there as well. Mr. Ortega’s teachers have included Saul Kay, Don Butterfield, Toby Hanks, Scott Mendoker and Floyd Cooley. While in San Francisco he performed with the San Jose Symphony, San Francisco Concerto Orchestra, Napa Valley Symphony, Golden Gate Concert Band and Toured with the Cornerstone Brass Quintet. In 1995, Frank was awarded the Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship award and a Teaching Assistantship to study at Rutgers University. It was there that he earned his teaching credential. While attending Rutgers, he performed regularly with the NJ Pops Orchestra and the Gramercy Brass Band. His teaching positions have included the Potrero Hill Middle School of the Arts in San Francisco, Fort Lee Elementary and High School Band programs, as well as instructor of tuba at the New York Summer Music Festival in Oneonta, New York. Mr. Ortega is currently principal Tuba and soloist with the Chelsea Symphony, performs regularly with the Waters Edge Brass Quintet and is the Band Director at Saddle Brook High School in New Jersey.
