Hey tubenetters,

The UGA Wind Ensemble, under the direction of John Lynch, is presenting a concert entitled "Next Festival," with three brand-new pieces, including two world premieres. Here's the run-down:

Kingfishers Catch Fire - John Mackey

Hammersmith - Gustav Holst

Lost Gulch Lookout - Kristin Kuster (premiere)

Appalachain Spring - Aaron Copland (this is the original for 13 instruments, conducted by Jake Wallace)

My Hands Are a City - Jonathan Newman (premiere)

Both John Mackey and Kristin Kuster will be on hand for the event and will participate in a pre-concert lecture at 7:15. Concert is at 8PM at the Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall in the Performing Arts Center on campus at the University of Georgia. Hope to see anyone in the north GA area there!!!

Seems like a strange piece to program at a wind ensemble concert...flute, clarinet, bassoon, piano, and 9 string players?

Why not? It's great music, and I think the reason it may seem strange is the same reason why it's a good programming choice.
