Hello All,

Well, I just got back from NETEW, hosted at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. What a wonderful 8 days! There were 23 student attendees this year, ranging in age from 15 to 73. Skill levels ranged from near beginner to near professional, with a large cluster of accomplished high school and college age attendees (plus a few of us old timers).

Mike Milnarik (tubist) and his wife Sanae Kanda (composer/pianist) have organized a terrific event that has grown successfully for the third straight year. Roland Froescher came over from Switzerland for the 3rd year to be the resident euphonium teacher and artist as well.

Mike and Roland are both wonderful teachers. (disclosure: I study with Mike). While I cannot speak for the 16 tuba participants, I know that the seven euphonium participants (myself included) got a great deal from the week during our master classes and private lessons from Roland. Over the course of the 8 days, each of us improved substantially, culminating in our solo recitals on Friday, July 11 and our ensemble recitals on Saturday, July 12.

We had evening concerts by professional groups including:

Sunday - Solo Recital - Mike Milnarik and Roland Froescher, Sanae Kanda, acc.
Monday - Innovata Brass Quintet
Tuesday - Cosmopolitan Tuba Quartet - Roland Froescher, Adam Frey, Matt Brown, Mike Milnarik
Wednesday - Dr. Fidgety Dixieland Band
Thursday - Brass Planet

In addition to Roland and Mike, Sanae Kanda accompanied all of the professional guest artists as well as several of the student performers and wrote a number of the compositions performed by Mike and the ensembles. Also accompaning the 23 students was Bonnie Anderson, piano teacher at Univ. of Massachusetts- Lowell.

We also had clinics offered by Adam Frey, Mike Milnarik, Matt Brown, Roland Froescher, and Jamie Lipton; two guest artist recitals by Matt Brown (tuba) and Adam Frey (euphonium); and four emerging artist recitals from Patrick Nyren (euph), Mary MacKinnon (tuba), Dan Hunter (tuba), and Jamie Lipton (euphonium).

Perhaps one of the best things was the fact that the guest artists (Frey, Brown, Lipton) stayed for several days both before and after the performances and "hung out" with the students so that we could ask questions and learn at the seats of the masters.

I had a great time and would recommend this event to any student of either euphonium or tuba, regardless of your current level of performance.
