It's almost euphonium and tuba time on Long Island again. Each year the Suffolk County Music Educator's Association (SCMEA), sponsors Howard Hovey Tuba Day. As the chairman of this event for the past 27 years, I thought that our readers might be interested in knowing about the event, which is celebrating its 28th year. Primarily geared toward middle school and high school euphonium and tuba players, we do attract college students, teachers and pros. The event will take place at the Sayville Middle School on Friday, Nov. 7 from 3-9:30 pm. Events include massed, select (All-Star), and faculty tuba ensembles rehearsals during the afternoon and a clinic by our featured guest artist. This year's artist will be Dr. Charles Guy, professor of euphonium and tuba at The Crane School of Music of SUNY Potsdam. The pm concert features: the Sunnyland Quartet (trad. jazz) with Art Hovey, the All-Star Tuba Ensemble, Chuck Guy, the LI Tuba Quartet, the Faculty Tuba Ensemble, and the grand finale 250 piece (or more) SCMEA Massed Tuba Ensemble. The concert is free to the public and participation in the event is $15.00 payable to SCMEA.
