Howard Hovey Tuba Day 2009

Hopefully, many of you saw my article regarding Howard Hovey Tuba Day in the last ITEA Journal. Each year, the Suffolk County Music Educator's Association (SCMEA), on Long Island, sponsors Howard Hovey Tuba Day. As the chairman of this event for the past 28 years, I thought that our readers might be interested in knowing about the event, which is celebrating its 29th year. Primarily geared toward middle school and high school euphonium and tuba players, we do attract college students, teachers and pros. The event will take place at the Sayville Middle School on Friday, Nov. 6 from 3-9:30 pm. Events include massed, select (All-Star), and faculty tuba ensembles rehearsals during the afternoon and a clinic by our featured guest artist. This year's artist will be Dr. Marc Dickman, jazz euphonium soloist and professor of low brass and jazz studies at the University of North Florida. The pm concert features: the Sunnyland Quartet (trad. jazz) with Art Hovey, followed by the All-Star Tuba Ensemble, Marc Dickman, the LI Tuba Quartet, the Faculty Tuba Ensemble, and the grand finale 350 piece (or more) SCMEA Massed Tuba Ensemble.
