Tuba set to "Shine" in Burnie

Post by tastuba »

A shining example....Tuba Shines

It may sound like a bit of a joke to be a soloist on the tuba, one of the sometimes forgotten instruments at the back of a large orchestra. But the Burnie audience should be prepared to be blown away with astonishment, when world renowned tuba artist Les Neish takes the stage in Burnie.

Les Neish will join the City of Burnie Brass Band and the Ulverstone Municipal Band in this concert in the Town Hall at 2pm Sunday 16 October.

Burnie Arts & Function Centre Director Mr Greg Leong explains, “Les Neish is a professional tuba player from the United Kingdom and is considered one of the leading tuba players of his generation.”

“If I could sum him up with a few words” adds Burnie Brass Band’s Robert Bentley, “I would have to say he is a very versatile virtuoso with a broad repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary compositions. No stranger to popular music he has also recorded on an album with Sting.”

“Away from solo performance, Les is privileged to be part of the tuba section of the world famous, American based, Brass Band of Battle Creek and as a chamber musician, Les has performed with the UK’s leading ensembles.”

“We are extremely fortunate to have such a talent visit Tasmania. Les is spending a week in Tasmania performing in schools and running workshops. His week here will culminate with the concert here at the Town Hall.”
