Gato Loco shows update... with new videos

Post by tubajoe »

Gato Loco update:

Gato Loco, NYC’s 10 piece “Psycho-Mambo” band, that takes equal parts Latin jazz and arena rock... throw in some modernist chamber music and brass band sensationsatonalsm... and there you have it. (with buckets of tuba!) Fugues over Merengue, odd forms, odd meters, and a tuba part that turns me inside out! (the composer, Stefan Zeniuk insists on pushing the tuba to the edge) It's a pile of folks who skate the barriers between jazz and rock and classical...and anything else that we want.

Gato Loco will be in Europe in late April. We’ll be at the Stanser Musiktage festival in Switzerland on April 20th. (and more European dates TBA)

Gato Loco is playing in NYC at the famous 92nd St Y on March 17th

The full Gato Loco will also be in Europe in July, and later in the year as well. Dates and locations TBA

A smaller (the original) quartet version of Gato Loco (called ‘Gato Loco Cuatro’) is providing the musical score for the legendary burlesque/circus team Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey’s show “Mumbo”. We did this show in Baltimore in 2009 and it sold out every night. (there was even a tubenetter or two that showed up!) The NYC premeire of the show is at Brooklyn’s aerialist theater, the House of Yes March 9, 10, 11.

some Gato Loco press:

“This band brims with enthusiasm and sounds like the orgasmic lovemaking between James Brown and Tito Puente” – de Volkskrant, Amsterdam

"Colorful like molten-lava" – Crisscross-jazz.com, Paris

“Exotic and simultaneously urban” – Le Monde, Paris

“An irresistible blend just waiting to catch fire onstage” – Musiques Impures, Paris

“A real barnburner!” – Paris DJs, Paris

“Spicy, punky Latin classics” – Time Out New York, New York City

“I loved it!” – Performance Artist Laurie Anderson

“I don’t know whether I was struck more by the aural textures or by the totally ***-shaking grooves”
– Acoustic Levitation, North Carolina

"Provides electrical pulses to your brain which involuntarily start to question your motor skills in the art of dance" – Holy Filament, Chile

“Intense Latin brass reveals the unsuspected connections between the origins of mambo and the abstraction of free jazz, while a battalion of percussion and lascivious guitars shakes the audience into a bewitching frenzy.” – Arte Live Web, France/Germany

"A wonderful, freak-Hybrid" – Jazz Thetik, Germany

“A barely-controlled chaos is the sprawling combo’s accustomed state and their pressing task...is to harness that raucous, celebratory atmosphere. Zeniuk shapes a mottled glitz to disguise his leviathan’s dancefloor glide as they parade across the decadent ballroom, exhuming vintage south-of-the-border stylings.”
– All About Jazz, New York City

“This music does make me feel great and want to dance and sway and groove. They have done an amazing job of writing, shaping and directing this music. It is rare to hear music that makes you want to dance and whose arrangements are also a marvel of invention.”
– Downtown Music Gallery, New York City
