World premiere of Impromptu on Itsuki Lullaby this weekend

Post by Yutakatuba »

Hi All,

If you are in Burlington, Vermont area this weekend, I would like to invite you to a world premiere of my new piece titled Impromptu on Itsuki Lullaby for Tuba and Recording with Slideshow.

http://www.flynntix.org/Productions/Det ... fix=FSX12S" target="_blank

The piece is based on a Japanese lullaby called Itsuki Lullaby which depicts miserable lives of poor young girls sold to work as a servant for the wealthy family. The concert will feature include 4 more composer/performer world premiere pieces.

Saturday, June 16, 2012, 8:00 PM
$18 Adults, $14 Students
Includes $1.00 Preservation Fee

New musical solo works composed and performed by Tom Cleary, Rachael Elliot, Alec Julien, Patricia Julien, and Yutaka Kono.

What happens when five musician/composers, united by discipline and the goal of creating solo works, are also unified by the challenge to stretch, defy, and discover new modes of performance?

A sonic exploration of the physical forces of attraction and repulsion (one that activates puppets!).
A musical conversation with Mozart about artistic achievement.
A sad and ghostly tribute to poor girls forced to work as servants for wealthy families.
A musical interaction with poet John Berryman.
A collage of found-object wisdom, revealed through music, song, and fortune cookie text.

Working together with project director Paul Besaw, this premiere by The Solo Workshop, the third of its kind, will feature five artists presenting live music that incorporates storytelling, puppetry, video, movement, lighting, and more to bring a “total theatre” approach to music composition and performance. Each piece reveals something unique and “magnetic” about its inspirational source (and its creator!) Stefan Jacobs will serve as project designer and technical director.

About The Solo Workshop
Led by co-artistic coordinators Paul Besaw and Patricia Julien, The Solo Workshop (TSW) is a collective of individual artists creating and performing solo works and collaborating with one another during the creative process. The main objective is to deeply investigate many facets of what is meant by “solo” and to share the details of the individual process of creating a solo work with the other artists and with the audience. Established in 2008, TSW has previously developed and premiered two evenings of original performance. Isolation Interference (2009) and Significant Others (2010) both premiered at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts (FlynnSpace) and showcased a multidisciplinary artistic approach to solo performance from the contributing artists who represented dance, film, music, theatre, and visual art.

Sounds like a really cool piece! Any chance that this work will become available for other performers at some point? I'd be interested take a look at the work, if possible.

Good luck!
