Greetings all,
I am pleased to announce the 1st Annual Roy Main Low Brass Festival at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, CA. As many of you know, Roy was a state of the art play and a state of the art teacher of low brass instruments. The list of world-class player that he taught is long. When he passed away in May 2011, he was teaching at Cuesta and at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I determined at that time that I wanted to start a yearly event in his honor at our college.
Our first festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23. Our clinicians and soloists are ALEX ILES (one of Roy's students) and JIM SELF. As you know, both of these gentlemen are "first call" players in the L.A. recording studios and are serious symphonic players. We will begin at 1:00 on Friday with clinics and ensemble playing. We have more clinics on Saturday morning, then a concert with the Cuesta Wind Ensemble. Alex will play Bill Reichenbach's "Streets of Paris" and an arrangement of the "Flower Song" from Carmen (the later on euphonium). Jim will play the Wilhelm Concertino and his cute arrangement of Clarinet Polka. There will also be an ensemble piece with Alex, Jim, me, and a couple of other serious players from our area. The concert is at 3:00, and it ends the event. The concert will also feature the San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra, a fine community ensemble in an all Russian program. It is rumored that Alex and Jim will sit in on Russian Easter Overture and Firebird.
Except for the concert tickets ($15/$10), the event is FREE OF CHARGE. San Luis Obispo is located on the beautiful California Central Coast. We hope that some of you can join us! Drop me a line at jennconductsATmac.com for registration.
All the best,
Jenn Martin
