Everyone who can should get to UT Austin Wednesday night (2-16-05) to hear the premiere of John Corigliano's first band piece, "Circus Maximus." From all reports, it's a great work in a spatial style, so it's not a run-of-the-mill band tune. Since we all seem to have an interest in new music for the tuba, check out what JC has. His name has come up. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It's also being played at CBDNA at the end of the month!

Anyone who goes should report!

I went to the clinic at TMEA that Corigliano and the UT Wind Ensemble did, and all I can say is AWESOME!!! Very original, well thought out, and extremely effective! The surround sound compositional style is absolutely incredible! It is a true treasure that one of the great composers of our time has written this jewel for the band medium.

On a side note, having been a huge fan of Mr. Corigliano's for over ten years since I discovered his first symphony in high school, I personally felt like a teenage athlete getting to see Michael Jordan play. I got his autograph after the clinic, and I don't think I've ever been more nervous. Great experience, great piece, and any and all of you should check it out should you have the chance. BTW, it's being played next weekend at Carnegie Hall in NYC.

I also heard the piece at TMEA. What an incredible piece of work! If you live near or in Austin, TX, you should really catch their performance. There should be a live broadcast on KMFA from what I heard.
