On Tuesday, February 24th, the University of Arizona Brass Choir will be performing my transcription of Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night) for double brass quintet. This work was written by Arnold Schoenberg in 1899 for 2 violins, two violas, and two cellos. It was later (1943) written by Schoenberg for string orchestra. Belmont Music published this transcription about 25 years ago. Belmont is the publisher for Schoenberg's works and owned by his son Lawrence.

Sam Pilafian asked me to take on this project about 25 years ago. It was Sam's idea. This upcoming performance will not only be attended by myself, but also Lawrence Shoenberg himself! This upcoming performance will be only the second time this transcription has ever been performed. It took me a year to complete and when I finished, Sam told me it was probably 10 years ahead of its time. In truth, it may be 25 years.

Brass musicians for the most part aren't familiar with this composition. It is without a doubt one of my favorite works and if you've not had the pleasure of listening to this piece, please take the time to do so. This transcription is rental only. I don't sell the parts, so don't ask. The phone number I have for Belmont is 310 454 1867. If you can attend the concert, please come say hello to me.
