Chicago Notable Events for 2015-2016

Post by Northern »

Hi Troops,
Gene Pokorny here. I am the tuba player in the Chicago Symphony. Sorry for the boilerplate email but I want to get this information out soon to as many as I can contact. Please forward this information to any who may have interest.

There are several events of particular interest to brass players in the 2015-2016 season at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. You may want to attend these events, tell your students about them or even organize a group to get to Chicago in order to take advantage of these events.

The closest event on the calendar is the National Brass Ensemble concert taking place on Sunday, September 20 at 3 PM at Orchestra Hall. The NBE consists of fine brass players from orchestras across the USA. It was organized to commemorate the famous 3 orchestra brass section recording of the music of Gabrieli in 1968. Check the link below. Because it is on a Sunday afternoon, you and your students can come from far away in an organized van or car pool to take advantage of what will truly be a unique event involving this many players from nearly a dozen professional orchestras. The stars won’t line up again like this for a long time. Group sales for discounts at the CSO: http://cso.org/ticketsandevents/group-services/" target="_blank or call 312-294-3040.

As many of you are aware, the year 2015 marks the centennial of the birth of Arnold Jacobs, principal tuba player of the Chicago Symphony from 1944-1988. His playing career was only superseded by his legendary and innovative teaching which has influenced brass and wind playing over decades. There will be several events towards the end of 2015 which will synopsize his contributions by noted experts in the field.

The first event of note is the CSO Brass concert to take place on Wednesday, December 16 at 8 PM at Orchestra Hall (Symphony Center). This has become an almost annual event and will be a highlight for many brass players for the holiday season if not the concert season. Following this concert will be a panel discussion made up of present and past members of the CSO Brass section speaking of Arnold Jacobs and his influence. The panel will be hosted by noted WFMT program host, Carl Grapentine. Check out this link:

In further commemoration of Arnold Jacobs’ contributions as a world-renowned educator, pedagogue and performer, there will be several more events of note in collaboration with the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic which will be held at McCormick Place.
This second event will be Thursday, December 17 at 12 noon. The host will be founder of Tuba People TV, Mike Grose. Details on the link below:

The third event will be Friday, December 18 at 12 noon. The host will be Indiana University Provost Professor of Tuba and Euphonium, Daniel Perantoni. Details on the link below:

Finally, the last event commemorating the Arnold Jacobs centennial occurring at the Midwest Clinic will be a concert by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago on Saturday, December 19 at 11:15 AM. In this concert, the Vaughan Williams “Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra” will be performed with the soloists being the regular and associate members of the tuba section of the Civic Orchestra being handed off to one another. The cadenzas will be taken from the recorded legacy of Arnold Jacobs himself. At this point, there is nothing as yet posted on a link for details to this event.

……………………………………………………………………..

There are plenty of other interesting programs for brass enthusiasts besides those listed above. By browsing the CSO 2015-2016 season, here is what you can find: Bolero, The Planets, Haydn Trumpet Concerto, Rhapsody in Blue, Shostakovich Symphony No. 15, Fountains of Rome, movie scores of Back to the Future, On the Waterfront and Raiders of the Lost Ark played by the CSO while the movie is shown, Sibelius Symphony No. 2, the Alpine Symphony, Firebird Suite, Bruckner Symphony No. 9. Find them on http://www.cso.org" target="_blank and if you have a class or group that wants to come along, contact group sales: http://cso.org/ticketsandevents/group-services/" target="_blank or call 312-294-3040.

Enjoy the end of summer. Cheers, Gene

swillafew is right (sorry I missed you at the concert, John). The Gabrieli pieces were wonderfully balanced--a great homage to the original 1968 recording. The John Williams "Music for Brass" was as impressive as expected and highlighted every section of the brass ensemble. Great event.
