This was a terrific event, long overdue in the Twin Cities area, and well-arranged by David Paulson.
One note - due to some conflict, everything was moved to Saturday only. Didn't matter, they fit everything in for us.
The Bethel campus is sprawling, to say the least, but David managed to keep everything except lunch in the one building; a great thing for those of us lugging big horns around. We were all welcome and encouraged to bring our horns to each clinic.
The clinicians were terrific, with a variety of break-out sessions. Joel Pugh, Gail Robertson, Marty Erickson, Dave Werden, and Deanna Swoboda all solo'ed for us, with Deanna bringing down the house on her performance/dedication to Sam Pilafian (I forget the title at the moment, but it was one from Travelin' Light - Avalon, maybe). Jim Ten Bensel was in attendance, but did not perform, which is too bad. A variety of high school, college, and adult amateur musicians performed for our audience with clinicians offering their insight and instruction. The final massed band was a fine time (well-heard in the box in which we performed!) with tubas ranging in size from one Eb travel tuba to a 5/4 Rudy; oh, and plenty of euphoniums, too.
A number of vendors were there as well - Adams, Eastman, Besson, Schiller, Miraphone, Cronkhite bags (and I'm sure I'm missing some), and Tucci mouthpieces were given away to each of the high school and college soloists. Marty Erickson brought a case of his CD album "Smile" as free parting gifts to honor Sam Pilafian as well. Mine is in my office CD player right now.
All in all it was an excellent way to spend a Saturday; fine people, excellent networking opportunities. I hope that this will become an annual event.

I also want to say the event was a great success. I learned a few things (as one hope to learn one thing at best), so this was a great success for me. I got to meet new and old friends. I too greatly enjoyed the mass group concert on Saturday night. Being the Eb travel tuba, I had a lot of people interested in the instrument. Paul did a great job. I too hope this event continues in the future.

Sorry that I couldn't make it this year! I've got two young kids, so my weekends aren't really my own... maybe next time!

(Any chance they can do this earlier in the year? You know, during the time we're all stuck indoors anyway, and NOT on the first warm day in months? ;))

[quote="opus37"] Being the Eb travel tuba, I had a lot of people interested in the instrument.

Brian,
Did you get to show your horn to the Cronkhite guy? He was pretty amazed that your little backpack case could hold an actual tuba, said he'd never heard of a travel tuba.

Yes, I did show it to him. He did not seem that excited, but was interested. I suggested that the Wessex style case worked well. It would be nice to see something like that for my miraphone.
