Give me advice on how to make things better

Re: User name

Can I have SteveP for the same reason? That's my user name on all the other forums. For some reason I couldn't get when I originally signed up but maybe it's available now?

Can I change mine to Gongadin? That would be in keeping with my username on other forums.

I think if people change their usernames, they should be forced to display their old username in their signature for some length of time (6 months? a year?) Otherwise, it's a little confusing.

Do you mean to tell me that your old username was Willson 3050-RZ??

That's not his user name. Willson 3050-RZ is the name on his birth certificate. Isn't that right, Mr. 3050-RZ?

...don't forget about recording bells!

Point is, if everyone up and changed their names at the same time, then it would be very confusing to try and understand who you are actually talking to. That's why in the real world, it's hard for people to actually change their names. Although, I guess you're not required to tell anyone about that.

Anyway... this is clearly all very important. Besides, I'd hate for you all to be confused when I change my screenname from bort to bort9000, and then change my real name from Brett to bort. :P

Were I to change my username to "troll" or "poot", I guarantee you that everyone would know who it was...and - even if I changed it to "paul2344" - it would take everyone (anyone how would care about knowing) about four seconds to figure out who I was.

Perfect IRL example of this effect:

Basic Training at the Reception Station where you get your medial work, uniforms, haircut, etc. -- You have spent about two days with these people you have never known, some of whom you might have met on the bus or plane. You are suddenly forced to live with them in open spaces with no privacy. You only have the one set of clothes they allowed you to have - the ones you wore to the MEPS Station where you were sworn in and from where you shipped out.

When you finally are marched to the barber shop to have *all* your hair shorn and everyone now has the same glasses frames and then you don your utilities for the first time you realize that you have no idea where your new friends went, you do not recognize *anyone* at all. It is a very disorienting feeling. You have to start over and meet everyone again. When you remove that bit of individuality, like hair and glasses, like a particular shirt, pants or shoes, you realize how much you DON'T look at in a person. It is frightening.

Changing names online en masse would net exactly the same effect. I have seen it before, when a place goes up in flames and someone starts a new community to replace it. Many people take the time to change their old name to something new.

And no one knows who anyone else is for a long time.

So, it appears that it is possible to change my username. Who do I contact to do so? I would like to do this so I can have the same username on various music-related forums. Thanks in advance for any information.
