Wedge SJ Solo Mouthpiece
After several months of fine tuning with the help of Sasha Johnson of the Orchestra of the National Ballet of Canada the SJ Solo is ready for production. The SJ Solo is similar in size to the popular Roger Bobo Solo, but the Wedge Rim and adjustments to the cup have produced a mouthpiece with superior flexibility, response, and clarity of sound. This is an excellent choice for solo work on the F tuba. This is the 4th tuba mouthpiece in the Wedge line, including the H2, SG, and 7B.

Further to Dave's post, I wanted to let people know that this is truly one of the finest bass tuba mouthpieces I have played. I was looking for the response and sound quality of the Yamaha Bobo Solo, but with enough weight, body and low register centre for orchestral excerpts or quintet playing on my B&S F tuba. This mouthpiece does it all.
As I've mentioned in previous posts, the main result of the Wedge design is a more immediate centering of the sound, which facilitates an overall greater response throughout the range of the instrument. With the Solo model, the area this seems to impact most is the middle-low register on the F, from those troublesome notes starting around low C below the staff. Unlike any other mouthpiece I've tried, the Wedge gives a consistency and stability to this potentially problematic register. Anyone who has experienced frustration (or worse) with the low register of their German style F tuba should try this mouthpiece. It delivers a truly remarkable level of body and consistency to that part of the horn, while maintaining clarity and brilliance throughout the rest of the range.
A special thank you to Dave Harrison for his hard work and patience throughout this entire process. We ended up going through many different versions and modifications before completing this mouthpiece, and it's a true testament to the quality and workmanship of his mouthpieces that he put in this amount of time, energy and expense.
With the completion of the Solo model, I am confident that this new line of Wedge mouthpieces will soon become standard equipment for many tuba players. Anyone with any questions or who is interested in trying any of the Wedge line should feel free to contact me directly.
