Spring 2015 Tuba Collection at The Horn Guys

The big news at The Horn Guys is that we have a new spectacular e-commerce website launching in the next month. The links below go to sample pages on the new site. It's not yet functional, but you can look around as we continue to fill in the content. To order, please phone or email for now, and we'll send everyone an announcement when the shopping cart is up and running. We have some terrific tubas in stock. Read on for more info.

Miraphone 1281 Petruschka F Tuba – This is a premier piston valve F tuba with perfect pitch, perfect low range, beautiful broad tone and a compact size. This one is lightly used, played professionally in LA, and is in absolutely perfect mint condition. Includes brand new all leather Glenn Cronkhite case. Click the links for photos. $9200

Used Miraphone 186 BBb Tuba – A classic 4 rotary valve tuba, this example is from the 1970s. All sheet brass construction gives is a very light feel compared to many modern tubas. With evidence of many dents repaired, this tuba has some miles on it, but the valve action is perfect and totally silent. If you don't mind a slightly faded finish, this is a fine player. Includes new Protec gig bag. $3495

G&P F Cimbasso
This is a piston valve cimbasso made in the Italian tradition by G&P Wind Instruments in Legnano, Italy, a suburb of Milan. This instrument is owned by the Santa Fe Opera, and except for a few tiny marks from handling, is in perfect condition. G&P is comprised of the former crew of Kalison, who found themselves out of work when Kalison was purchased and then closed. G&P also makes beautiful trumpets and tubas. This cimbasso has a large F tuba piston valve section, and is the most tuba-like of our cimbasso offerings. It has a .748" bore, 10.6" bell, and includes hard case and wooden travel crate. Finished in silver plate, without end peg. This model sits on the edge of your chair, but otherwise looks the same as G&P's current offerings. It has one movable auxiliary main slide on the leadpipe for pitch adjustment. All 5 valves are right hand, 5th rotor is a flat whole step. Fits standard tuba shank mouthpiece. I don't know which cimbasso stand might work with this instrument. I recommend a decorative rug and some traffic cones. $7000

Cerveny 651 F Tuba - Traditional medium size 5V rotary F tuba made in the Czech Republic, this is a special model with all valves right hand, includes second slide trigger operated by the left hand. It's very light weight with sheet metal bows, made in the old style, and reminds us of an older B&S in mannerisms. Very playable, beautiful workmanship and attention to detail. Includes hard case.
SALE $4795

Jupiter 582L BBb Tuba - Four front piston 4/4 size BBb tuba, similar in size to the King 2341, but with a slightly larger bore (.732"). Nice player, generally equal to the King in pitch and projection. These have improved remarkably through the years. Includes wheeled hard case.
SALE $4495

Gronitz PCK CC Tuba - Large 6/4 5V piston CC Kaiser tuba, one of the best in the world. It's Hirsbrunner quality, custom made in a small shop in Hamburg, Germany by Dietrich Kleinehorst. Many players win auditions on these. They are very lightweight, being made mostly of sheet brass parts. This model is in silver plate, and has a tiny ding in the top bow from some minor mishandling at Gronitz. It's tiny. It could be taken out with a magnetic dent ball, but don't bother. It's like a door ding on a car. But, you get a special price. Sold without case.
SALE $15950

Alexander 163 CC Tuba – The awesome large rotary CC tuba is reinvented. This is not your father's 163. In the past few years, Alexander has completely retooled and redesigned this CC tuba. It's no longer an old design cut down BBb, but is now a true proper CC design, and it's more reminiscent of the big B&S PT6 tuba. All sheet brass construction like a Gronitz or Rudy Meinl make an incredibly lightweight instrument despite its large size. .808” bore, 5 valves, all right hand, open wrap 5th loop. We have your choice of yellow brass or gold brass bell models in stock. The new generation of Alexander instruments is they best they’ve made, and their enthusiasm shows. Here's a video of Sarah Willis discussing double horns with Hans Herrman of Alexander. We now also now stock Alexander double horns, like the model 103.
