Working with Tony George and instrument builder Jim Langley, Wessex has developed new valved ophicleide, or Bombardon in Eb. Here is first view.
The valved ophicleide were intermediate between keyed ophicleide and tuba, mostly manufactured in mid-19th century. The new Wessex is not exact replica of any particular historic instrument, but new design to provide tuba players in modern orchestra with instrument to make a more appropriate tone for works with ophicleide part.
I am going to play the new ophicleide myself for performance of Sullivan Di Ballo Overture with Salisbury Symphony Orchestra (UK) on 5th December.
