arpthark wrote:Speaking of Willsons, Jonathan, does Wessex have any input as far as the thickness of the sheet brass or is one thickness used for most applications? Willsons have such thick brass, I wonder if that would bear some grounds for experimentation at the factory.
The answer is yes. We are already experimenting with different brass thicknesses

ValveSlide, Wessex is not finished in UK. If anyone is so misinformed, they probably bought from shop, or used. We never make such claims ourselves.

I'd like to see something similar to the Kanstul flying tuba, i.e. a small 3/4 or smaller travel tuba with piston valves. All of the prodoction travel tubas I've seen to date have been rotary horns and I'd like to see something similar only with pistons.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, maybe a Conn 2XJ inspired 6/4 BBb BAT? Or, at least some replica bells possibly?

A 3/4 F tuba similar to the Yamaha YFB-621. Used ones seem to sell for $4000-$6000.

Piston tubas that will accept MAW valves.

I'm just surprised there's been no buzz about cloning a rudy 3/4 cc

Sure the market for them isn't good with everyone wanting a big piston cc, but I am sensing a change in the atmosphere regarding this.

Wessex is not really into 'cloning' currently available models, so are unlikely to make a copy of the Rudy ¾ CC while it is being made in Germany.

Yes we do sell some 'clones' which are already made by the factory, but I am encouraging them against 'cloning' - and instead we either design new, develop an existing design to make better, or resurrect great designs from the past. Sometime a combination of all three. The Excelsior BBb, Tornister tubas, Wyvern CC, Gnagey Eb, Ophicleide, Bubbie 5, Bombino Eb, Stumpy Bb, Eb sousaphone, Festivo front action euphonium, Danube rotary Eb, Anton rotary CC and new Eb Helicon are all examples where Wessex are making previously unavailable designs of instruments available.

Thanks everyone for the feedback - it is much appreciated! It will help inform us to make what people actually want...rather than just something I want to play

Since you asked:

1. I'd like to see a bass trombone like this one, but with better valve linkage:
http://www.galvanizedjazz.com/tuba/Bassbone.html

2. We need Buescher-style helicons. Everyone who has tried my Buescher BBb helicon is very impressed. It has 4 pistons by Bohm & Meinl, 0.750" bore. Bloke has demonstrated that the same horn can be cut to CC with excellent results. (Scroll down to the end of http://galvanizedjazz.com/tuba.html to see a photo of mine along with Tom Holtz's Eb Buescher. Removable bells would be a very valuable improvement.

3. I'd like to see a short-bell King 2341 clone with a better piston set. The valve tubing could easily be rearranged to eliminate most of the water traps.

4. PLEASE end the embargo on valve sections! They can't be as hard to ship as entire tubas!

It'd be nice to see a single-valve bass trombone :)

If you want to get really creative...a sitdown version of a marching baritone. It is a really cool instrument, but backbreaking for civilian use! It would be basically a 3/4 or smaller euphonium. Would be an all-round low brass instrument especially for when euphonium is too mushy. Maybe it would supplant the anemic British baritone.

Almost the same exact thing could be done for a marching mellophone...would be a 3/4 tenor horn, with different bell. Maybe it would supplant the farty British tenor horn.

This is already under development in collaboration with Torbjörn Hultmark. See this article in the British Trombone Society magazine:-

Vented valves. It is inexpensive and makes slurring easier.

Jonathan: any progress on getting the factory to sell valve blocks (no tubing)?
