John Packer SOUSAPHONE @ Army Conference !!!

Postby bloke » Thu Feb 01, 2018 6:46 pm

This is everything you might wish a King was (stainless steel pistons, nickel silver NICELY ALIGNED slides, a bit thicker body branches, etc.) and at half the price (yep: even lower-priced than the Taiwan mock-up).

The intonation is really great...Being really picky, just about as equally-flawed here-and-there as King.
  I'm seeing that the 5th branch may (??) have been shortened to allow for the main tuning slide to extend out farther, so there is actually something there to grasp and pull. The neck (rather than the low-slung King neck) is Conn-style, with Olds/Reynolds-style (identical, not the annoying "#1" and "#2") tuning bits.

For you King #26 classic mouthpiece fans, (yup) that's what the included mouthpiece sure reminds me of...

The case is a complete reference of the special USA molded cases which feature the (not available on the run-of-the-mill-ordered version) heavy-duty butterfly latches.

I'm going to bring it to the Army conference, but please  be a bit careful around it, as it is already sold, and my booth is going to be jam-packed with instruments. ~~IF~~ things get too rambunctious (??), I'll take it out to my van, but will bring it in for those with sincere interest (band directors, etc.)

...and we just saw the post about the van, and have notified the Washington Post.

random information:
I tried out a few King slides on this instrument.
King slides seem to line up quite nicely, but are just barely too loose...
maybe by 2/1000th inch or so.
King slides would certainly work in a pinch…and certainly the King crooks.
That having been said, the JP slides fit as nicely as they do on with the professional level tubas that JP makes, so they're not going to be falling out of the instrument.
