Austin Howle - Montreal Symphony - Sellmansberger Solo Mpc.

Postby bloke » Tue Jun 26, 2018 3:16 pm

Austin had some of our mouthpieces, but is more accustomed to flatter-profile rims...so he'll finally be using them.

He stopped in for a bell-swap (late 1970's B&S "Symphonie" 6V F tuba). It was pretty frantic, because he (depending on others for transportation) showed up two hours late...and the next stop was the airport.

We did find a minute to make a funny video...' will post later.

LOL...

Austin showed up (due to issues with the person supplying transportation) after 12:00 noon - needing to leave absolutely by 2:00 P.M. to catch a flight back to Montreal.

In that time, I had to
- buff a dark-brown patina off the inside and outside of an old B&S "Symphonie Modell" (replacement) bell for his tuba
- remove a considerable quantity of (then: revealed) dents from that replacement bell and straighten the rim
- remove the original bell from the instrument.
- remove dents from the tuba's upper bow (near the bell brace, as there was an opportunity to do so that was presenting itself)
- solder on the new bell, mouthpipe, mouthpipe brace, thumb ring.
- clean up solder joints (until time constraints forced abandoning that)
- repair a broken-at-both-ends main tuning slide brace (airline damage, as the airline damages this instrument in his streamlined/expensive carbon fiber case every time - that I've seen - that he's brought this tuba down here to have work done)
- help him pick out a mouthpiece combination
