Wessex Prokofiev played in Boston Symphony

Maybe tonight history was made with the return of the BBb tuba? Mike Roylance played the TB693 Prokofiev in concert with the Boston Symphony Orchestra - the first professional gig for the new BBb tuba which has been called “the best tuba in the world”.

Opinion: The rich sound produced by the Prokofiev seems to be just the sound that orchestral players have been searching using 6/4 CC’s to try and reproduce the ‘Chicago sound’ - but never with any of the reproductions quite achieving. The Prokofiev sounds just like a 6/4 CC, but with greater resonance and fuller, warmer tone.

I heard Andy Smith and Gene Pokorny demonstrate this tuba, along with the two versions of the Chicago York CC tubas last year at a demo at Northwestern University. This tuba had a very distinctly resonant sound. All three were excellent, but the BBb was really special, at least to my ear.
