Barbara York Concerto

Hi everyone,

I just got back from Rochester, where Don Harry had a recital tonight. I want to first congratulate Don on a great recital. There was a lot of different types of music on the recital, and each were played amazingly well.

The reason I'm writing this is that Don played the Barbara York Tuba Concerto, a piece which I heard a bit about on TubeNet, but never really thought about it.

What a really nice piece of music this is! It doesn't sit too high on the tuba, it has a really nice feel to it, and I think it's very friendly to the audience as well.

I'm tired, and I have to work early tomorrow morning, but I had to share that about this work. I'm going to buy my copy of this piece tomorrow!

I put this offer out a while ago, but if anyone orders a copy of the Concerto between now an the end of November I will throw in a free copy of Directions by Barbara York as well. From the site, just order the Concerto and I will put a copy of Directions in with the order.

One other piece we currently publish by her is "3 Romances". Of the three we currently publish, this is my favorite. It sits well on C and is very lyrical!!

Never heard of it (or her, actually). Thank you for the heads-up on it.

Barbara started writing for tuba after she served as accompanist for my old teacher, Mike Fischer, while he was on a recital tour of the midwest. She loved his playing concept; simple, beautiful music that shows off the tuba's tone and ability to turn a phrase (read: very few high-euph-register fireworks).

She began writing for tuba almost immediately after the recital was over. Her first piece, Sea Dreams, was on one of the recent conference competition lists (was it ITEC? I can't remember). My favorite piece of hers (so far) is Arioso Gloria, which is short, lyrical and in a PERFECT F tuba register throughout. Both of these pieces are through Tuba-Euph Press.

I haven't heard the concerto. I'll be looking into it for sure.

About 20 minutes. Thre is nothing in the piece that is over the top in terms of difficulty. I have played it on C Tuba (in my basement) and range is not an issue for a large horn.

All I could find on the website was the one "War and Rumors of War" Is this the same concerto or a different one? I'll definitely be buying the concerto after hearing Don play it. . . great piece!
