This is a picture of an Air Force band equipment truck that caught fire while the band was on tour. tuba.jpg[/img]

If it got that hot, it would have been in pieces. Solder melts at about 275 degrees. Annealing requires cherry red--well over 1000 degrees. If the tuba is still assembled, all it needs is a cleaning, probably.

That may not mean anything in particular. The guard could be held in place by gravity or a well-placed dent in the bottom bow.

My information shows 70Sn30Pb solder (the kind used in brass instrument manufacturing) melting at around 190C or 375F.

Wood burns at about 450F by comparison.
