NYC Tuba Christmas travel question

Post by Hank74 »

I would like to ask those who have been to the NYC Tuba Christmas, but who have flown there, how do you take your tuba or sousaphone with you? With the huge size of the instrument and the new security issues, does anyone have any experience in this?

I know the PSU band comes to take part, but I would presume they take the bus to the Big Apple.

DON'T carry on any valve oil...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

This is the same problem you would have flying with your horn for any reason. I was at a NYC TubaChristmas once talking to a guy who had flown in with his Cerveny (not sure of the model) that had some nice new creases in the bell. He said that they were courtesy of the airline. He had packed his horn is a hard case with padding around it, and it still got hammered. Most hard cases are not designed for travel, and most cases designed for travel are too large to check as luggage without massive oversize charges, if they let you take them at all.

The answer is, If you want to go and must fly, bring a euphonium, well packed with lots of extra padding, including a play ball in the bell, in a sturdy hard case.
