Lamp Oil = Waxy Build Up Inside the Horn?

Post by Bob Mosso »

I recently changed from Yamaha Premium value oil to straight ultra pure lamp oil. Sometimes I'll put a few drops down the leadpipe in an attempt to prevent unwanted things from growing.

I've noticed a waxy build up, mostly in the main tuning slide. It cleans out easy enough. As the lamp oil evaporates does it leave behind a wax?

It shouldn't--it's pretty much kerosene, although there could be some heavier weight waxes in it. It's a great solvent though, so I wonder if it's simply not dissolving your slide grease.

Why not pour a bit of yours in a saucer and let it evaporate over a few days and see if there's something left?

Great idea, I'll give it a try.
