By chance, I was walking past Avery Fisher's artist entrance last night and ran into Joe Alessi. He said that they had to show to play the National Anthem. All in all, still an easy paycheck last night.

When this thread started I was going to take bets on there being an encore with tuba in it (this happens every once in a while - I've even heard about a tuba player in a major orchestra who had to go on a long tour just to play one encore) Having to commute to work only to play the Banner is an orchestral tuba player's bitter sweet reality. I wonder if they had to show up to rehearsal for it :)

A question for anyone interested: What is the longest period of time you've heard of a tuba player being off while the rest of the orchestra is working? (I've heard one orchestra had 6 weeks in a row in the middle of the season with no tuba)

Not quite the same, but I was on tour once in Portugal, and all I had to do for a couple of weeks was play From the New World (best two week vacation I ever had!)
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
