mouthpiece for conn 56j
I recently bought a conn 56j and found that the mouthpiece that I have been using has too small a shank for this tuba. Subsequently it goes in to far and I am having intonation problems. I was wondering which mouthpieces you would reccomend for this horn. I have been looking at the pt 36. I know there are a lot of mouthpiece questions on this forum but I couldn't find anyting in the archives that answered my question so sorry if this seems like an old topic. Thanks in advance for all the help.

Try a European shank. Also, f you ask around further, you will find mixed opinions about the intonation of these horns.

PT36
I have a PT36 with a larger (European shank). I have used this mouthpiece on my Meinl-Weston 2145. It is in new condition and I will sell it with a mouthpiece case/pouch. I had another PT36 in college that I used on my PT-3p also. It should fit the Conn with no problem.
you can email me at jerry.elwood@nkch.org
mouthpiece is $60 which includes shipping. They are $99.50 new at Custom Music and this piece is like brand new.

Dillon Music sells a very inexpensive mpc adapter that is essentially a 2 inch (or slightly less) piece of straight, tapered tubing that fits directly inside the opening of the receiver. Then you put your "typical shank" mpc inside this adapter. It essentially turns an American shank into a European shank.
I forget the cost, but it was "very reasonable".
Without it, all of my standard shank mpcs went too far into my 56J receiver. With it, everything I have works like a dream -- no need to buy Euro shank "special" mpcs.
Cheers,

I've always had the GW mouthpieces sit in further on my instruments. I think that's part of the design of the mouthpiece. You're right though, the 56J and Taku is a great combination for that gentleman playing it.iiipopes wrote:The guy beside me in community band uses a GW taku. Yes, it goes basically all the way into the receiver, but gets a great tone.

I use a gigantic Doug Elliot. Sounds great. But then again, as my wife will tell you, I have a big mouth.
The Hellebergs that ship with it sound too bright to my ear.

I am convinced that 90% of the problems with rhythm, tone, intonation, articulation, technique, and overall prowess on the horn are related to air issues.
