Howard Hovey Tuba Day 2006
It's time for me to post on this annual event again. Each year the Suffolk County Music Educator's Association (SCMEA), on Long Island, sponsors Howard Hovey Tuba Day. As the chairman of this event for the past 25 years, I thought that our readers might be interested in knowing about the event, which is celebrating its 26th year. Primarily geared toward middle school and high school euphonium and tuba players, we do attract college students, teachers and pros. The event will take place at the Sayville Middle School on Friday, Nov. 3 from 3-9:30 pm. Events include massed, select (All-Star), and faculty tuba ensembles rehearsals during the afternoon and a clinic by our featured guest artist. This year's artist will be Gail Robertson, renowned euphonium virtuoso, composer, and instructor of euphonium and tuba at the University of Central Florida. The pm concert features: the Sunnyland Quartet (trad. jazz) with Art Hovey, the All-Star Tuba Ensemble, Gail Robertson, the LI Tuba Quartet, the Faculty Tuba Ensemble, and the grand finale 240 piece (or more) SCMEA Massed Tuba Ensemble. The concert is free to the public and participation in the event is $12.00 payable to SCMEA. For more info, contact me or check the SCMEA web site at www.scmea.org . You must then click on exec. board, find my picture and click on Howard Hovey Tuba Day. For registration forms click on "what's new" on the SCMEA homepage.

Dillon Music will be there to set up a display for those who would like to try horns. Art Hovey will be there playing trad. jazz with some of my buddies. 220 participants will be there (a record number for our event.) The Long Island Tuba Quartet will be there and we'll be test driving my latest arrangement of Edgar Winter's, Frankenstein. Gail Robertson will be there!! You won't want to miss it - this Friday!!! I'm sorry if it's too far for some of you to attend and I certainly understand, but..... party at my house afterwards!
