I'm a high school tuba player in Indiana, I plan to pursue a music career after high school, which means I need to buy myself a tuba for college. I'm looking for a five-valve B-flat horn. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I personally enjoy playing a BBb but it obviously is not the instrument of choice for many university programs which often prefer their students use CC horns. You might wish to discuss this with your current teacher and/or prospective university program. There are also many posts about this exact situation throughought the list here which you might wish to aquaint yourself with.

Wait until you are more certain where you will attend college to buy a horn. Let your future professor have some input into your choice of tuba.

I'm going to buck the trend and say that you should get a CC tuba ONLY IF your choice of future ensemble is going to be easier to take part in if you're on CC.

When it really comes down to it, nobody besides other tubists will really care what you play on as long as you sound good.

There are BBb tubas out there that are good enough for pro tubists to tell me, "If this horn was out when I bought my first new tuba, I might never have switched to CC."

I recentlly made the switch to CC, and I really like it. I think that some people don't want to make the switch because they are either lazy or afraid that it will be too hard. It really isn't, it just becomes second nature after a while. So ask your future professor what he would advise you to do, and then move from there. And if he says that it would be a good idea for you to switch, then I would do it.
