giving myself a headache...

Post by tubatom91 »

I am trying to figure out what I want in a tuba. I know I want either a meinl weston or a mirafone. But, I dont know if I would benifit from learning CC. If I went with CC I dont know what would be a good horn. I am looking for anything under 2000 dollars. I dont need anything new! but I am still torn between BBb and CC....

First define what you are looking to use the tuba for. Then decide what kind of sound you need to accomplish this. From there, decide what kind of sound you are looking for, and what can best help you accomplish this.

If you need help, descriptive words over the internet are not going to help you. Speak with someone you trust, better yet use your ears.

If you are unable to do any of that, again decide what you are looking to use the tuba for. You can get plenty of opinions here!

well,to start with I am a sophmore in high school and I dont know what I'm going to do with the rest of my life (major in college). I am looking for a good horn for band class and ensemble work, I want to go to college so I will be taking the tuba with me. My teacher basically told me to buy german or not at all.

I'd let your playing develop a couple more years, and save up money in the mean time to add on to that 2,000 now. surely you have a school horn now to play on, no need to buy a horn at this level.

Save up as long as you can. If you try enough tubas, you will suddenly fall in love with one. Play it at a friend who has GOOD ears. If you both like it, buy it.

Don't rush things then! If you're not planning to be an orchestral tuba player, I don't see a need for you to make a BBb vs CC choice then, either. Stick with BBb unless a CC horn that you can afford blows you away with it's sound.

Your teacher's not giving you BAD advice, but there are lots of non-German horns that are great. Lots of clunkers out there, too, so before you plop down a lot of change, make sure it's the horn that YOU want, not your teacher.

And have fun. Buying a tuba is like buying a car; lots of opinions out there, but what you want is the one that works for YOU.

Try to get somewhere that'll have a BUNCH (well, more than one) of the horns you're looking for, whatever you decide your most important characteristic is. Call ahead. Take a like-minded friend.

And have fun. Unlike disarming bombs in Iraq, nobody's gunna die if you don't get this perfect!

(but finding out the most you can is the smart way to start)
Just MY opinion...

For $2000, there aren't many choices, even used. Keep saving your money. When you have saved $3000, you have access to good choices in Bb. When you have $4000, you will find great choices in Bb and maybe a few used CC tubas. Good choices in CC will require more like $8000 if you buy new, and not much less if you buy used.

When you have the money saved, take some of it and spend it on lessons from the local symphony pro. Ask his advice.

Unless you are going to major in tuba performance in college, I can think of no compelling reason to play a CC tuba.

It smells a bit trollish in here, by the way.
