I was going to vote for Chicago but that wasn't on the list, so then i was going to vote for Minnesota but that wasn't on the list either

I do think London is the best, but out of this list I voted for LA. Why, you might ask?

Ten years ago the LA Phil didn't sound all that great. The horns clammed a whole lot, and the strings lacked togetherness. I have no idea what actual changes they made, but the group sounds better than ever and keeps getting better every day.

They also have some nice places to play now. Not like they didn't before, but now....

Do the top two vote getters in your BCS for National Symphonic Orchestra Poll face off on New Years Day to fight it out for the right to call themselves #1 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA for 2006???

I still won't believe it until we adopt an official structured orchestra playoff series.

Now we will have to develop separate divisions. Wouldn't be fair to throw a small regional like the Elgin Symphony against a Division 1 Heavyweight like the New York Phil. I wonder if they will let me into Orchestra Hall with my big foam #1 finger. I mean it just ain't a symphonic concert if you can't wave the big ole finger! I bet we could really get fans in the seats with somehing like the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders doing routines during concert selections. I mean Beethoven's 9th with a good lookin blonde shakin' her money maker in front of you just has to put butts in the seats!

Seems to me the heavyweights would be the CSO, BSO, NY Phil, and LA - they are all on the same level as say in college football - Ohio State, Michigan, Florida and USC. SF, Cleveland and Philly remind of Notre Dame with great tradition and just a shade below the top level, but fighting hard to get just that little bit more to get back to that absolute top shelf. The others on your list are on a distinct level below that.

This of course leaves out all the non-US orchestras of which there are several top flight ones.

Vienna Philharmonic und Staatsoper? Cincinnati? Chicago? Houston? Seattle? Israel? Staatskapelle Dresden? Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre? San Francisco? Lots of orchestras missing on that list.......

That will be the HCS (Hall Championship Series), and done according to a formula that will include the actual pitch of the A, seat softness, available women's restroom facilities, program production, and ease of parking. Difficulty of programs picked is also included, but only in critic voting, and we know how accurate that is...
