This takes me back a few years to Freshman Theory. Here's how I remembered modes:

Idiotic Dumb People Like Modes A Lot

Ionic, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Lochrian

Still works for me every time!

Yes, especially when St. Gregory plays jazz:

In the Mode
I'm in the Mode for Love
Mode Indigo
In a Sentimental Mode

Or even pop groups:
Anything by the Modey Blues
Depeche Mode

Or as an alternative, get out your statute of the saint, put a beret, sunglasses and a goatee on him, and play mode music to your heart's content.

Doric, Ionian, Corinthian are the columns. Together we got it right.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Good music didn't happen until about 1835, when people started playing the tuba. That means you don't have to worry about the names of those modes (unless you are cramming for your Master's comps!) It's not really anything to worry about!

I thought Ionian was his aunt. Maybe that was before the operation.

Yes, you are correct when it comes to columns.

This post was a result of a conversion I had with a violist (I'm serious) of a well known orchestra (not near Seattle). I mentioned "modes" and he ask "what?". I said "You know Ionian, Dorian...". He said "Oh, you mean columns". BTW, I had the good sense not to use the word intonation in our conversation.
