Hey RichlandTuba, thought I'd pipe in. Since you were asking what the Virgian all-state stuff was like, I thought I'd toss out what the Illinois all-state stuff was (it's been a few years though, I is in kollej know).

For Illinois, it's predetermined whether you'll be auditioning for orchestra or band at the all-state level based on your audition at the regional level. I believe only those who made an orchestra at the regional level and qualify for auditioning for orchestra at the all-state level. Anybody can get picked to audition for band.

The's two levels for each ensemble (Honor band, all-state band, honor orchestra, all-state orchestra). Band auditions are just like they were for regionals (two contrasting etudes from the Blazevich 1 book, a 4 sets which are rotated so that you never audition on the same set), that gosh darn crazy scale sheet of doom (covers all major and melodic minor scales). There may also have been sight reading, but I forget...

Orchestra auditions are excerpts from the pieces both orchestras will be playing. So the year I did orchestra, I auditioned on Tchaik 4, Tchaik Romeo and Juliet, Blue Cathedral, and Shostie Festive Overture, even though I only played Romeo and Blue Cathedral with the honors orchestra.

That's how it goes. I dont' remember the exact numbers for the Blazevich etudes...but anytime I play a random etude out of it and I stumble across one of em, I know it right away!

In Virginia, we have districts that each hold honor bands.
The audition material consists of 2 major scales, the chromatic scale, sight-reading, and a prepared etude.

Two major scales?!? I'm not sure which I find more disappointing. Is it Texas with NO major scales, or is it Virginia with TWO major scales. Is the implication that the vast majority of the music to be performed(by an all-state group) will be in one of two scales. Or do you mean that the audition only listens to two scales with the two being selected from several to be prepared. I understand the difficulties with the audition process that make hearing scales and sightreading a little problematic, however I still believe they should be included.

I wonder what the order of importance is in the adult world for the following skills:

1. sightreading
2. basic technique
3. playing Blazevich or whatever

I don't know why all all-state audition processes don't include sightreading.

i'm a junior. I didnt even try out freshman year and last year I didn't make it past phase 1. Reigon 3 is pretty tough (DFW area) but hopefully i'll get it next year.

I made TMEA 5A All-State this past Saturday.....they only take 1 bass bone from each area....there are 7...and I am one of them....YAY!

One of my sophmore euphonium students made 5A All-State on Friday, I was very proud of him a great accomplishment. Well I check out his excerpts and what do I see the Damn Gatti etude we have been working on since September! AHHHH MAKE IT STOP!! I was looking forward to put that thing behind us, but its like a bad penny!!
