You cannot play as loudly as these guys do. No, not even you with the 8/4 Yorkissimo. You cannot.

They're actually acoustic locators, and in 1930s Japan in this case. According to http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/COMMS/ear/ear.htm they are intended to be used alongside the antiaircraft batteries on the right side of the picture.

When I found the original page, I stopped at the bit about the horns in that photo. The rest of the exhibit is turning out to be pretty interesting, though (for me, anyway; I had a granddad who was involved with developing advanced radar and missile guidance systems).
