I know this isn't the typical question for this place, but I thought it would be a good place to get some advice. I checked in the archives but thought I'd get a little more up-to-date information.
My band is looking into investing in a wireless microphone system. I play a sousaphone and typically have just taped a wired mic down my bell with pretty good results. I've heard from several sources that wireless mics don't do a very good job with tubas, and some brief experimenting has confirmed that. However, I'd like to hear from anyone here who might have more experience with this issue on what might work well, or if I'm stuck at the end of a microphone cord if I want to sound decent.

Given that you've got a good quality transmitter/receiver using a clear channel, the only problem spot with a wireless mic is in the microphone (as bloke and others noted). Fortunately, the good quality mics have good quality radio units too.
Think of the radio frequency as the cable...yes, you can have problems with the cable, but the most important part is having the good mic. And, as someone noted, most wireless mics anymore can be adapted to a wired situation, and verse vica.
