Three pages of posts and there hasn't been a single "wrist slap" here regarding the legality/morality of trading around an obviously UNLICENSED (Oh, the humanity!) set of recordings for FREE. Doesn't it bother anyone that Mr. Deck isn't being paid for this?!?! Don't you realize that by pirating music you stifle its creation?!!? It's hard to believe we've gotten this far in the thread and nobody has commented on it---Tubenet you're letting me down!

Track 9 is from Rachmaninoff's 1st Symphony in D minor, the first movement I believe.

What a stud!! Bro. Deck plays in reality at the volume I hear in my own wishful thinking. BTW, one of the 'bones seems to be top drawer as well on this cut, with french horn-like qualities in his upper register.

The great Russian soul seems to shout during this huge brass tsunami. With headphones on, one can really feel the power and majesty of this portion, especially this specific recording.

Small animals have been frightened by my Andre Previn-LSO recording of this piece because I turn up the volume as loud as I can stand (I've often wondered if John Fletcher was the tubist on that Angel recording). I have always wanted to hear this passage as a brass only version and now I can, thanks to TubeNet.

The Houston Symphony trombone section at that time was most likely:

Allen Barnhill, Principal
John McCroskey, 2nd
David Waters, Bass Trombone

Allen Barnhill and John McCroskey were co-principals for a while, and may have been taking turns playing first in these excerpts.

I had the pleasure of playing with this section in the HSO a number of times, and they were fantastic. Barnhill is still principal, and the audition for Waters' spot is taking place in the near future. McCroskey retired a few years ago. John McCroskey had the ideal second trombone sound - huge! Add Dave Kirk to the mix and you really had a fantastic sounding low brass section.

I know that Warren bought a large Holton CC from my teacher Bill Rose, and I think he bought it after arriving in Houston to fill the tuba chair after Mr. Rose retired from the HSO. I don't know if Warren was playing the Holton on this recording (someone mentioned that he was), but it's not unlikely.

Does anybody know where and when this was recorded?

I used to have a tape of the NYP low brass doing a clinic in Dallas, and that playing was also mind boggling. I really wish I knew where that tape got off to.

When I was studying with Warren (1989-1991), he would often sit on the other side of the room and either play along with me or alternate with me on excerpts. I used to often wonder what the heck I was trying to do after listening to him play with that huge sound, and I feel that way again after listening to these excerpts. Holy crap.

It was recorded at the Second National Tuba Euphonium Symposium Workshop (predecessor to the ITEC) at North Texas State University in May of 1980.

Do I recall correctly that there was a "legit" cassette tape recording of this available following the conference (possibly distributed to interested members through TUBA or the symposium organizers)? Anyone know?

Somewhere, burried in a box long since sent to storage is some sort of cassette tape from one of these events. Wondering if this is the same one.

I seem to remember that they offered tapes of the sessions. If you want to confirm this you may try contacting Don Little (he was the host)

It wasn't exactly their choice since I played it so loud.
Sad to say the girlfriend just wasn't impressed like I was...

Is there a way to put this on a CD? I have a program that converts .wma files to .mp3 but it appears that the original files are 'read' protected.

Thanks for the info on date and location, Norm.

Based on the Norm's info and my sometimes poor memory, this probably would have been shortly after Warren left Houston to join the New York Philharmonic. I believe he started the NYP gig in 1979.

Since Warren was playing with the section, this was probably before they hired Dave Kirk in Houston. I believe there was at least a season in between Warren's departure and Dave's arrival.

To respond to Tubatinker, there is a program that can be used to strip the DRM from any wma file called Fairuse4WM, and once the DRM is stripped, you will be able to burn the wma's. This program is in a grey area as far as legality is concerned, but then again, so are we.

[edit] - I was totally wrong above, all you have to do is right click and then select properties, then select unblock, then hit ok. The program isn't needed.

I had no problem dragging the tracks into iTunes, it just had to convert them to mp3 when I did it. I assume from there, I can burn them onto CD

For the copyright implications. No doubt it is not strictly legit. However, at least these are not commercial recordings, so no one has actually lost any money from lost sales. In fact some listeners may be so inspired by the excerpts that they go out and purchase a CD of one, or more of the whole works to hear in context.
