My point exactly. (cue music of a patriotic sort)....Where else but in America can you find a place so open minded that even the notes of Arnold Schoenberg are regaled in such an eglatarian fashion. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a great day for the notes of music to stand up and be heard in all their individual glory, a day when they can co-mingle with their brother notes and form something that is totally unique to the listening experience that it gives joy to all peoples regardless of Race, Creed, Color, or stylistic leanings. I say that the freedom of notes is one of America's most basic virtues...Let Freedom Ring...with any notes of it's choosing. Good night, God Bless, and God Bless America in Bb, C, F#, or any key, with any notes you choose (music fades, pictures of happy, shining people populate the screen, a beautiful sunset fades to black...)

Got two (conflicting) parade gigs in the AM. Playing the one which pays better on my pre-King full circle American Standard Eb soozyfone with a Kelly 18. Actually had a third parade but the band had to cancel because most players willing to march were already doing the same parade as I. Didja ever notice that the musicians willing to march a few miles are not necessarily the young'uns. We range in age from 20 (my son-trombone) to well into the 80's (!). I'm tired of hearing 30-year-olds tell me that they're getting too old to march.

Our community band plays at 1 in the local bandshell. Decent acoustics for outside. Cannot understand why they will not let the tubas sit in the back row!(with a dome on top I guess I can) Salute to America is the theme this year. Stars & Stripes Forever; Washinton Post March; a couple of polkas and finish it off with God Bless the U.S.A. Have a parade in the afternoon in which a few of us will ride along. Just hope there is plenty of refreshments as it can last a while(use your imagination on what kind of refreshments!) It will be a fun day as long as the music does not blow off the stand.

You playing on the bandstand at Franklin Field or downtown on the mall? I have alot of incredible memories of both places as I grew up in Rome and graduated from RFA in 1978. I remember when the Syracuse Symphony guys played in the band and later I was fortunate to play in the band. Are you a native?

I'm actually a "native" Nebraskan, kind of a funny term, since I lived on a reservation in South Dakota for 4 years. I moved to upstate NY two years ago now, and word got around about my tuba playing, so I had a call from them.

Most of the players are band directors from the area, or local players. My wife tells me that she knows at least one of the guys is from the Syracuse Symphony. They re-formed the band last year (not reformed) after it was "disbanded", so to speak and have some grant money coming in. Everyone in the group is a strong player, so it is fun.

The 4th of July gig is at Gansevoort Park at 7:30..unless it rains. Then, it is in the Capitol Theater
There is another concert on July 19 at Franklyn park
again on July 26
and another (don't know location yet) on August 1st

Just got called to play bass in yet another country gig. Probably not paid well, but at least it's a shorter drive than an hour. Either way, I should be done by six, provided the bandleader doesn't yet again surprise us with the bonus of an extra hour of playing without pay.

I'm marching in the Wheaton parade with the Wheaton Municipal Band in the mornin. Tomorrow night I'm playing with a little band put together for the fireworks with people from around town playing. The fireworks always seem to go off late, so we play more. There seem to be many junior highers this year, so the sounds we make are....interesting...

Thursday night I'm playing with the Wheaton Municipal Band at Memorial Park at 8PM. Feel free to stop by and say high. I get the honor of sitting first chair. Before the concert I get to play with a little dixie band called the Dixie Cups (D-cups!) starting at 6:15.

Should be fun!

I began the 4th where I will end it--pushing a patrol car around the county, chasing after drunk, stupid people who come to my attention. In between, I will be marching with the One More Time Marching Band in the Creswell (pop 4500) 4th of July parade. Our list includes Washington Post March, Hey Good Lookin' and Louie, Louie. I will be playing a borowed King Souzy. And although Chuck G isn't out of the woods yet, this is his neck of the woods, with our hottest day of the year forcast.

For the last 24 years, I have played the 4th at the Mt.Washington Hotel with the New England Wind Symphony. Thius year the Mt.Washington is replanting their grass so they are not holding the concert...something about the ski lodeg and a 3 piece country western band....(ugh!)

So instead,Iplayed Saturday in the Ayer, MA.festivities with the Nashoba community Band (formerly Harvard Town Band) and I will play the 4th with the Lowell Summer Concert Band on the Merrimack river.

I play euph...my Connstellation in the Ayer band and my Sovereign in the Lowell band. Both concerts are the standard patriotic "Pops Concert" format...ending with America the Beautiful (Carmen Dragon), 1812, and Stars and Stripes.

BTW, I first playd the Carmen Dragon arrangement of America the Beautiful in my county Honor Band in 1968 directed by (yup) Carmen Dragon. I no longer use the music for that number or for Stars and Stripes, having memorized the part at least 25 years ago...

I don't want to get too nostalgic here, but I played my first patriotic program in years last Thursday, including 1812 with cannons, lots of Sousa, National Emblem, etc. It was a blast, even though I am still playing a borrowed instrument (St Pete, in this case). Nice to discover I can still carry an 80-piece band.

Dogwood Dell in Richmond, as usual, in front of about 30,000 indifferent people waiting for the fireworks. End with the 1812 with the VA National Guard providing the cannons and the park carillon supplying the chimes, and then Stars and Stripes.

We will also be playing some music for the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown including "The Return of Captain John Smith" a cornet/tuba "duel" with me on my Eb sousaphone. Unfortunately the cornet always wins .
