Mouthpiece help

I play on a PT4P in quintet, community band and orchestra. My current all-around mouthpiece choice is a PT 84. I like most everything about it but would like try try something very similar with a sharper rim. I had occasion to play on a Bach 18 recently and liked the rim, but not much else. I like my sound and intonation best on bowl shaped mouthpieces.

I am not an equipment expert like so many on this board and am thankful for advice toward finding such a mouthpiece.

The Sidey SSH (stainless steel Helleberg) has become my all-around mp, after many years of using multiple mp's on any given gig I am now carrying just this one. True, it doesn't have a bowl-shaped cup, but it is plenty deep and the tone is really nice. Additionally, the sharper, flatter rim makes all of your notes more predictable across the entire range.

A Wick 2L has almost an identical rim to a Bach 18, with the same cup diameter as your PT, but a slightly different hybrid cup. Try one. It may be what you're looking for. I'd loan you mine, but mine is just a 2 with the smaller shank and won't fit a PT receiver.

Either Curry, Laskey or Elliot can make you a rim.

The problem is that the sharp rim is most associated with Helleberg-style funnel cups, so you may have to get one made for you. I don't know what Loud does, but they also have screw rims.

Finally, don't some of the PT's come with screw rims as well?

Sounds like you want a Laskey 30G (or a 28G), which has a pretty sharp rim, more bowl than funnel kind of cup. 28G is closer to PT-84 in cup diameter. I only have experience with the 30G, but if the 28G's rim is the same as 30G's except smaller, you should be pretty happy with it. I have almost never heard of anyone NOT like Laskey tuba mouthpieces. BTW I think the PT-84 is great. I tried it at Custom music and absolutely loved how it played.

A new one to try: Curry D. I'm trying one next week and I'll post how it goes. It's described as a hybrid between a Bach and Helleberg cup, with good all-round tone.
