4th of July horn usage poll

With all of the talk here about sousaphones lately, after dusting off my 38K to march in a parade with an alumni band, and playing a concert before the fireworks , I wondered how much playing we did on the fourth.

Pre-fireworks extravaganza: everything from Armed Forces Salute to Birdland to Disney to Singalong to "our National March".

Fireworks started at the beginning of the dogfight - perfect timing.

SheetMusicPlus shows "Armed Forces Salute" as out of print. They've got something called, "Salute to the Armed Forces" by Dennis Reasoner, but I can't find any pics, clips, reviews, or anything to give some 'feel good' before I spring for it.

Anyone know where I can get "Armed Forces Salute", or alternatively, anyone have any personal experience with "Salute to the Armed Forces"?

Re: obtaining "Armed Forces Medly:" do you know anybody who plays in a local National Guard or Reserves band? You might get lucky and be able to borrow it, as our Shrine Band director did, so we could play each service theme as representatives of each branch posted their colors at the local national cemetary during Memorial Day observances.

OK, it wasn't on the 4th, it was the Saturday before. I'm still in good enough shape to march, I'm just lazy and either play concerts or play with a small group on a long flatbed trailer instead. More fun that way.

That's what I have in mind. We band members had a shade overhang, but the audience (and vets, including some pretty grizzled ones) sat in the blazing sun as the MC droned endlessly through individual recognitions. I don't for a second question the merit of a recognition, but we can achieve the same end with brevity and pizazz using the method you described.

You might look at "Armed Forces - The Pride of America!" arranged by Larry Clark and Greg Gilpin. I played this last year; as far as I recall it was OK, and grew on me after an initial lukewarm reaction.

But, there's really no substitute for the original. I'm shocked that it's OOP.

Google "Armed Forces Salute sheet music" located a few places that *claim* to have it - but they generally looked like places that don't maintain their own inventory and don't know what's actually available. The more reputable places all say that it is PERMANENTLY out of print.

I should qualify my response: I showed up with a tuba. After standing in the rain for a few minutes, we got our donation and were sent on our way. I think it was the second bolt of lightning hitting the ground within sight that tipped the scales.

As noted in another post, I/we didn't play for fireworks, as had been planned. Had I played, however, it would have been with my Miraphone 186. It was in a concert-type setting(would have been).

Sorry about that! First time I ever tried to post a poll and I had everything one line out of place. By the time I caught it and tried to edit, it wouldn't let me add a response for both. Maybe I'll stick to just asking dumb questions or giving even dumber responses from now on.
