Score for Barbarossa

Post by twoconnguy »

Does anyone know where I could find the score for the band accompaniment for Barnhouse's Barbarossa? Our band acquired the parts in a box of old music from a defunct community band, and some parts are missing, including the solo tuba. And does anyone know if the solo part is the same in the Buchtel version with piano as the old band version, other than key? The band version is for Eb tuba and the later solo is lowered a bit for Bb tuba. There was a man, Ray DCamp, on the old TubeNet that had modernized some parts in the arrangement, but he doesn't show up in current searches. Perhaps someone got a copy from him and would be willing to share a part or two?

Barbarossa is available for purchase, it is not out of print.

There are several versions of this solo I have seen, different keys, and watered down for students.

You can call Fischer (I think that's the publisher) and it is in their legacy collection. It is not in their regular cataloge, but they can make a set if you call and ask for it.

I purchased it a while back, it is not expensive ($40 or $50) and includes all the parts.

Thanks Kelly. I know it is still available from Barnhouse, but I was hoping that we wouldn't need to purchase a new set. I have the Buchtel arrangement, with piano, in my collection, but it is not in the same key as the 1897 version. I transposed it to match the old band arrangement, but without the original tuba part or score, I don't even know if it is the same length or uses the same variations. I also don't like how the part lays when transposed and played on a BBb BAT. It's not really too high to play, but the lowest notes aren't as dramatic when they are just a Bb instead of the low F. The main purpose of our band is to please the crowd, and people wandering into an outdoor concert are probably more impressed by how low we can go, rather than hear us try to play as high as some of the other instruments. Ideally I'd like to rearrange the band accompaniment to match the Buchtel, unless someone has already done that and is willing to share their thoughts about it.

Thank you, I stand corrected, it is Barnhouse not Fischer (at my age they all run together).

I played it with the band on Eb, so the key was good for me. On BBb, I see your point.

I have never come accross full parts for the other arrangement, just tuba and piano. Several students have done it over the years as it lies very well for BBb.

Sounds like a good project for someone with time and a computer...

Good luck. It's a fun old piece, sounds good and easy to play, just the way I like it.
