As is usually the case at work, I found myself yesterday playing little mental games to keep awake. The one that kept me the most occupied was the following one. Imagine you are stranded on a desert island, but with all of the necessary survival items, (tent, matches, first aid, etc....) Now also imagine that you have with you a stereo with an unlimited supply of batteries. Now tell me what 5 CDs you would want with you, and as a bonus, list one non-survival item you would want with you. Here's my list:
CDs:
Tom Waits-"Real Gone"
Bjork-"Medulla"
Fantomas-"Suspended Animation"
Gene Pokorny-"Big Boy"
Kronos Quartet-"Early Music"
One item: either a nice CC tuba, (like my Rudy or a MW 2000) or a laptop with a wireless card strong enough to pick up a consistent signal.
This game should yield interesting results. Enjoy!

My local Costco?
The City of San Francisco?
Golly, that's a hard one.

Don't need any CDs, because I wouldn't be stranded for long.
The one item:
Satellite phone that works. (hey, if he can have an unlimited supply of batteries!)

Last year at this time, I was working as a subcontractor with the U.S. Marine Corps. Our job was to change a small part of the Mojave Desert (on the grounds of the 29 Palms Marine Base). I had to look like a typical Iraqi for the time I was outside my makeshift hut or mess area. We worked about 80 hours (Monday morning through Thursday morning--although we'd arrive late Sunday afternoon) on a shift. Since we were improvising a combat area, we slept normal hours and were subject to wake up calls by the Marines. We were banned from bringing certain items. We couldn't bring computers, computer games, or cameras of any type. We were not near any cell phone signals. We had only four gallons of water per day per person. We had no electricity.
So what did I bring with me?
My little tuba
Reading material (clean magazines, books, Bible)
Battery powered TV
Several flashlights
A wall thermometer that could read over 130 degrees Fahrenheit
Junk food (which would probably be all gone by the time we went to bed on Sunday night!)
