You don't suppose they got band credit for spending time in the practices rooms, do you?pierso20 wrote:when I was in highschool, 2 guys got suspended and then expelled. They were caught using tuba mouthpieces as bongs in the practice rooms...gha

Why mess with the small stuff. Fill a sousa bell with grass and huff right through the mouthpipe. Sounds like something out of a Cheece and Chong movie!

I have heard of things like this that happened in Singapore and Malaysia where drug possession means a summary execution--no questions asked...Neptune wrote:Lucky it was not being shipped from overseas.

when i was in high school our marching band dresses up for rehearsal on halloween and he did the dole banana lady. he put fruit in his bell and it turned out really funny. well, we had a rather large water break and he sat his horn down. he took out most of the fruit but when he try to play it was really muffled. so he shook the horn and a squirrel jumped out. funniest thing ive ever seen.

I remember a sousaphone in my junior high school band room back when I was in the seventh grade (1969-70). The band director wanted someone to help him get some old instruments taken apart so they could be sold to one of the music stores. There was one sousaphone that the band director thought had been stolen in 1963, but it was in a big closet, hidden by stacks of old clarinet cases--something like a brick wall.
Anyway, this was an old King Eb sousaphone (had I been older and known what this was, I would have bought the instrument from Mr. Schmidt myself!) in almost brand new condition, completely assembled with the bell, gooseneck, and tuning bits all in their proper places. It even had the mouthpiece still in it.
I tried to play it, but it seemed a little stuffy. How could a perfect looking sousaphone sound stuffy? Maybe it's why they hid it like this in the closet six years earlier. The director and I carefully took the bell off the tuba and saw a white McDonald's bag stuffed down as far as it would go. But it didn't look like it was trash. It was folded neatly, as if someone were trying to save something. So I (rather stupidly) opened the bag...
It had a complete meal... cheeseburger, fries, and what had been a Coke. There was nothing in the Coke cup. I didn't unwrap the burger (but it felt like a rock). And the fries almost looked good enough to eat (this was back in the days when McDonald's didn't use frozen potatoes). There was also a receipt (written out by hand, except for the totals and tax):
-1 Cheeseburger.$ .18
-1 French Fries....$ .15
-1 Regular Coke..$ .10
SubTotal----------$ .43
Tax (4%)---------$ .02
Total========$ .45
Even in 1969, the receipt sounded too cheap to be true!

this isnt a souzy story, but along the lines of some others. I brought an old 20J home from the band storage room. i noticed t had a weird...'vibration' in the tone.
i figured that it was just a loose bracket or something. So, later on that night i washed it. i came in and the water was bright red. turnes out. some one had left a bag full of red sharpies in the old thing....too bad to. I like sharpies

Nope, that sounds right Bill. I worked at Mickey-D's in 66 part-time when I was in HS. A hamburger, fries & coke (called an 'All American' by the kids back then) was $.39 in 1966.LoyalTubist wrote:It had a complete meal... cheeseburger, fries, and what had been a Coke. If you wanted a milk shake instead of a coke, it cost you $.49. For Cheeseburger instead of hamburger, it was either 17 or 18 cents... I forget. Of course I only made $.85 / hour in '66.
Side note: As an employee, you could eat whatever you wanted for lunch or supper but just had to make out a ticket so they could track it. Interestingly, after about 2 weeks, I was turning bun halves back-to-back with cheese to make a grilled cheese sandwich... couldn't stand their hamburgers after awhile. It was the employees BTW, that invented the double cheeseburger / hamburger.
