BBC Proms Brass Day

Post by tubiker »

Dear All

Its a bit late but the BBC Proms had a Brass Day on Saturday 28th July at the Royal Albert Hall in London - the afternoon was an unbelievable celebration of all thats good in Brass playing and repertoire.

We had His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts playing Gabrielli and his contemporaries on period instruments - stunning in the Albert Hall accoustic - followed by Musicians from Uzbekistan, best explained by listening to the explanation on the broadcast. This was pretty close to a spiritual happening to see (and hear)an Eastern cultural experience. Grimey and Black Dyke playing some top line Brass Band repertoire both singly and together in Elgar's Severn Suite. Thats right folks, 4 Eb and 4 Bb Basses together - mega power :!: Both Bands played some cracking stuff at the kind of level of performance that you expect from both groups - the repertoire went from Elgar/Vaughan Williams to Henze/Wilby - listen and be amazed.
The afternoon finished off with Gary Howarths expanded arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition for Brass Ensemble.

Enjoy

Oh the memories. It's even better when you are one of the 8 tubas as I used to be back in my Morris Concert Band days doing all those joint gigs with City of Coventry conducted by Harry Mortimer.

I wish they had done Brass Band concerts in the Proms back in 1976 when I went to every Prom (I was a post-grad student at Imperial College but spent most of my time hanging out at the RCM next door!!) and slept on the pavement outside the RAH for 11 nights to get front row at the "Last Night"
