Bobo's Blog

Post by tofu »

http://bomaestro.blogspot.com/

I always find Roger Bobo's writing to have useful insight. In his blog he talks about Pat Johnson, his lessons with Bill Bell, some of his findings of being a teacher, why we need teachers and other interesting tidbits.

It appears he is currently in the hospital in Japan.

So what is the music in the background on his blog? It is some of the most wonderful playing I have heard in a long time. Where can I buy it? Got to have the CD!!!!!!!
Thanks, Phil

First of all: what Bloke said. (13)

About a year ago, I was curious as to what mpc Bobo used on a particular recording. I sent an e-mail to Tuba News, because Bobo had been writing for them. They evidently forwarded it to him, and he answered me directly. I thought that was mighty nice of him.

Impact

Post by Uncle Buck »

For probably a couple of generations of tuba players, Bobo was THE standard to listen to for solo recordings. I imagine the number of players whose initial concepts of sound, phrasing, etc. came from those recordings is significant.

Musically, I don't think ANY tuba soloist has come close to what Bobo accomplished.

Often imitated, never duplicated.

Isn't this the same recording as the one on Gravity is Light Today album?

Really!!

I am quite fond of the recording with piano that was on the original "Gravity is Light Today" LP. Haven't listened to it for quite some time, though.

Is that version not available on CD, then???

What tragic news for the Johnson family, especially given the year they've had. Although everyone knew who Tommy was, what may not be so well-known is that Pat was an equally talented studio musician who worked in the industry almost as long as her "famous husband".

A terrible loss for the musical community, and the Johnson family as well. Our thoughts go out to them.

Yes, that's Morning Song by Roger Kellaway. Bobo played it during a U.S. Coast Guard Band concert several years back (while I was still there). On my forum there is a free download of this recording in the Downloads for Members Only section. There are a couple other Bobo recording as well, including the Barat Introduction and Dance and Carnival of Venice.

You need to be a member of the forum to see this menu, but membership is free. Just sign in (or sign up) and look for the topic under:
Tuba and/or Euphonium -> Downloads for Members Only:
http://www.dwerden.com/talk/forum/categ ... &forumid=1

Then use the search box at the top to look up Bobo.

Does anyone know of a convenient place in the USA to buy the sheet music for Morning Song? It is published by Editions BIM, but no one seems to carry it.

Well, I guess I have to answer when opportunity knocks.

I bought it hoping I'd get the chops to play it someday - never happened.

You have GOT to read the piece Mr. Bobo included by hornist Fergus McWilliam. One of the BEST pieces of pedagogical thought I have ever run across! If you teach anything at any level, this should be required reading!

I am convinced that 90% of the problems with rhythm, tone, intonation, articulation, technique, and overall prowess on the horn are related to air issues.

At ITEC in Denver last year, there were a couple of occassions when there was some difficulty getting into the auditorium for a recital or lecture. A line would form outside the door and there were staff at the door and checking nametags before allowing you to enter. (Most of the time, this was not a problem.)

My wife and I were standing in one of these lines waiting to have our name tags checked. My wife, who is not a tuba player, was standing behind me. I heard her start a converstion with some one behind her, but I didn't turn around to see who it was.

When I heard her tell this person that he might have some trouble getting in since he didn't have a name tag, I finally turned around to see who she was talking to. It was Roger Bobo. He, in fact, did not have a name tag and yes, they did let him in.
