Euphonium Audition

Post by Scott C »

The US Army Field Band will be auditioning candidates for Euphonium. CD's (tapes ) and resume are due December 5th. Notifications will go out by the 2nd week in December. The audition itself will be in January 15, 2008.

The US Army Field Band is the Army's premier touring musical ensemble, located in Ft Meade, MD. Travel is a big part of the job. The band is on the road for 100-120 days a year. Spring and Fall tours are about 40 days each, Summer tour runs about two weeks. We do "run outs" to bring the total to about 100 days, some years it is more sometimes less.

The Army is offering generous educational loan repayment and enlistment bonuses. See your local recruiter for repayment and bonus details.

What to put on the CD (tape):

A solo ( or section, contrasting styles, movements) that demonstrates your very best playing, band excerpts, and maybe an etude or study. 10 - 15 minutes is plenty. Please make sure the recording and performing is of high quality.

Those that are invited will have all travel expenses paid for by the US Army.

Must be 17-41 years of age.

If you require any further information, please pm myself.

Has anyone ever used SmartMusic for this?

Well then, if I make it, see you there. Who else from your neck of the woods is going? If I'm there, and you and whoever else, we'll have to go do lunch, and I'll get the free salad bar by flirting with the waitress again. :P

And you don't even care to see me. After all that hanging out we did (or were supposed to do) at Potomac last year.:(

BOB:

Tapes and CD's should contain 10-15 minutes demonstrating the candidates stellar ability on the Euphonium. If a candidate has 10 minutes of stellar orch rep, GREAT! If it is band rep, GREAT! Solo or chamber, GREAT! a combination of all, GREAT! To assure acceptance, make sure it's beyond reproach. If it's approaching marginal, leave it out.

Once the tape has been accepted, the candidate will recieve music to prepare. The sight reading on the day of the audition may or may not include band rep.

Second guessing what a committe may want, or what may be on the audition is an exercise in frustration. Including selections on a recording because that's what a candidate thinks the committe wants to hear is futile. What the committe wants to hear is a great player. The line between marginal and stellar is distinct.

Put your best on the cd and bring your best to the audition and you will have success.

I hope this helps!

Good Luck!

So, when should we expect notification of the invitation? The deadline is only six weeks prior to the audition date. I take it we will know before Christmas?

Nick

EDIT: Should've checked the original post again. Second week of December. Answered my own question.
